Why We Built SimplePerm

The tools available for permission set migration today do not solve the full problem.

Free utilities handle basic conversion. Take a profile, create a matching permission set. That is about where they stop. They do not address the structural question of how to organize those permission sets into logical groups, and they offer nothing for ongoing governance. A year after migration, your permission set model looks as messy as your profiles did, just with different metadata types.

Enterprise platforms solve the governance problem but cost thousands per month. For a 200-person Salesforce org, spending $5,000 or more monthly on permission management is hard to justify when the initial migration is a one-time event.

Consultants (including us) can run the migration as a project engagement. That works, but it creates a dependency. When the consultant leaves, the client often cannot maintain the permission model independently because the methodology and the reasoning behind each permission set grouping were never transferred. Six months later, someone adds a one-off permission set that breaks the structure.

The free tier gives you the core tool most organizations need: a one-click migration wizard that analyzes your existing profiles and generates permission set recommendations.

The wizard lets you select the profiles you want to migrate, review a preview of the generated permission sets, and deploy, all within the Salesforce UI. Under the hood, it uses the Metadata API and Tooling API to read your org's current permission structure and build clean permission sets from it.

You also get a permission viewer that consolidates all permissions across profiles and permission sets into one screen (no more clicking through Setup menus), a side-by-side comparison tool for any two profiles, and basic reporting so you understand your current permission structure before you make changes.

The free tier runs entirely inside your Salesforce org. No data leaves your trust boundary. No external API calls. No cloud infrastructure. Your permission data stays exactly where it is.

What Is Coming Next

We are planning advanced tiers for organizations with complex permission structures. A Pro tier will add AI-powered recommendations that analyze your permission structure, suggest optimal Permission Set Group configurations, identify over-permissioned users, and flag redundancies. For regulated industries, an Enterprise tier will bring compliance automation and multi-org management.

These capabilities are still in development. We will share more details as they take shape. For now, the free migration wizard is the focus, and it is designed to handle the core migration problem on its own.

How It Works

Behind the scenes, SimplePerm orchestrates a multi-phase operation using the Salesforce Metadata API. What you see is three steps.

First, you select which profiles to migrate. SimplePerm shows you the permission footprint of each one: user count, field-level security grants, object permissions. That gives you enough context to prioritize.

Next, SimplePerm generates a preview of the permission sets it will create. You review each one, adjust if needed, and confirm. Nothing deploys until you approve.

Finally, SimplePerm creates the permission sets in your org and optionally assigns them to the appropriate users. The original profiles remain in place as a safety net. You can validate the new permission sets in a sandbox, confirm everything works as expected, and remove the profiles on your own timeline.

That is the whole process. The work that takes 40 to 80 hours manually is designed to take minutes with SimplePerm. What used to be a multi-month project becomes an afternoon task.

Data Trust and Security

We are consultants who work with regulated industries. We built SimplePerm's security model to meet the standards we hold our own client work to.

The free tier sends zero data outside your org. The migration wizard, permission viewer, and comparison tool all run as a managed package inside your Salesforce trust boundary. SimplePerm does not call external APIs. It does not store data outside Salesforce. Your permission data stays where your security team expects it.

When we introduce advanced features, they will process only permission metadata (object names, field names, permission grants), not customer record data and not PII. If your organization is cautious about third-party data access, you can use the free tier with zero external data transfer and evaluate advanced tiers later when they become available.

Keeping it clean day after day is the harder problem, and the one we are building the Pro and Enterprise tiers to solve.
